The mother and son duo had their fair share of ups and downs, but Richard was always the most important person in Mary's life. In her 1995 mémoire After All, the actress opened up about the heartache she faced following her son's death, espeically when it came time to scatter his ashes into the Owen River.
"The water was clear and high as I knelt over it," she wrote. "I opened the container and emptied it out into the rushing water. What was meant to be a prayer became an outraged demand. 'You take care of him,' I screamed at the sky."
